Madhya Pradesh: 2000 qtls of paddy worth ₹40L seized from border in Rewa

Around 2000 quintals of paddy worth more than Rs 40 lakh that was being brought to Rewa for procurement from outside the state has been seized.

Procurement of paddy by the government is in progress in Madhya Pradesh since November 1 and it will continue till January 31. Paddy is being procured at Rs 2183 in state, which is higher compared to market prices in neighbouring states, it is for this reason that paddy from neighbouring states in bordering districts is being brought to the state and the accused try to sell it at procurement centers through unfair means, said sources.

In Rewa district administration has set up check posts connecting the district with neighbouring Uttar Pradesh to check on unfair practices and prevent yield from UP to be brought to the state illegally, said sources.

“The surprise inspection was carried out for the entire night at Sohagi check post and around 8-9 vehicles were stopped and taken to the police station, their documents were sought. Of those some were able to provide valid documents, but 5 of them could not provide any valid documents. Around 2,000 quintals of paddy is in these vehicles. A detailed report is being sent to the district collector”, SDM Teonthar, P K Pandey told TOI.

He added, “As of now the paddy seems suspicious. Things will be clear only when the investigations are over”.

Sources said that it is every that district administration sets up check posts and intensifies checking in border areas to ensure that paddy or wheat is not brought in during the procurement period without valid documents.
