Mohali (Punjab) to keep strict vigil on influx of wheat: DC

By Bariderjit Saluja

Stepping up the measures to check illegal influx of wheat from neighbouring states into Mohali mandis, deputy commissioner Aashika Jain has urged police to keep a strict vigil and set up special inter-state border check-points on Jharmari barrier and Banur-Tepla Road.

She also ordered the district mandi official and market committee secretaries to monitor the arrival of wheat from other states in local mandis.

While reviewing the procurement arrangements, it was brought to the notice of the deputy commissioner that mandis adjoining Haryana border tend to face glut and the procurement process is hampered due to unprecedented arrival of crops from other states via local commission agents or other arrangements.

It was informed that local civil administration makes arrangements for estimated arrival of produce from villages under its jurisdiction, but they tend to fall short due to the illegal sale of wheat from neighbouring states.

Taking strict note of the transgression, Jain directed police officials to establish nakas so that wheat from other states doesn’t enter the district. She also urged the police to deploy personnel at mandis in the wake of Rabi marketing season to ensure smooth procurement.

The deputy commissioner said a total of 17 procurement centres have been set up at Kharar, Daun Majra, Bhago Majra, Kurali, Derabassi, Amlala, Lalru, and Tiwana among other places. Last year, the wheat arrival was recorded at 1,30,208 MT in the Mohali mandis.
