Tamil Nadu: State seeks more wheat from Centre

Wheat consumption has increased in Tamil Nadu due to changing food habits and the Centre should give 15,000 MT of wheat in addition to the existing allocation of 8,532 MT per month.

It could be supplied instead of rice or under open market sales scheme (OMSS), said minister for food and civil supplies R Sakkarapani on Wednesday.

He was speaking at the national conference of food and civil supplies ministers of states and Union territories in New Delhi.

He thanked the Prime Minister and Union minister of consumer affairs and food and public distribution for permitting TN to procure paddy from September 1 last year for the kharif season and requested the Centre to approve the same schedule for this year too at the increased MSP announced by the Centre.

He sought allocation of an additional 60,000 MT of rice per month under the OMSS to continue with many welfare schemes like free noon meal scheme and to control price of rice.
