Mustard Sown in 18.76 Lakh Ha in Rajasthan till October-End

By Kedia Advisory

Rajasthan has sown rapeseed and mustard across 18.74 lakh hectares by the end of October, covering about 46% of the targeted area of 40.50 lakh hectares for the rabi season 2024-25. Though current mustard acreage is below last year’s 22 lakh hectares, favorable monsoon rains and strong water storage levels are expected to support crop growth. The state has also planted gram in 7.25 lakh hectares, meeting a third of its goal, while wheat and barley have been planted in a minimal area, far from the targeted acreage. Overall, Rajasthan’s outlook for rabi crops appears promising as the season progresses.

Key Highlights

# Mustard sown in 18.74 lakh hectares in Rajasthan by October-end.

# Target for mustard acreage in Rajasthan is 40.50 lakh ha for 2024-25.

# Current sowing lags last year’s area of 22 lakh ha at the same time.

# Rabi pulses cover a third of the targeted area with 7.29 lakh ha planted.

# Wheat and barley sown in minimal area, with only 1.56% of the target met.

Rapeseed and mustard sowing in Rajasthan has reached 18.74 lakh hectares by the end of October, meeting 46% of the target for the 2024-25 rabi cropping season. The state’s target for mustard is 40.50 lakh hectares, slightly higher than last year’s 40.01 lakh hectares. However, the current acreage is trailing behind the 22 lakh hectares sown by the same time last year. As a major contributor to India’s rapeseed mustard production, Rajasthan remains crucial for the country’s winter oilseed supply, with other key producing states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.

Supporting this season’s sowing prospects, a favorable monsoon and ample water storage levels have led to improved soil moisture, essential for optimal crop growth. The increased residual moisture has allowed farmers to expand their planting area, and Rajasthan’s mustard crop could benefit significantly from these conditions. Farmers are also likely to complete the target area in the coming weeks if favorable conditions persist.

In addition to mustard, Rajasthan has achieved one-third of its goal for gram (chana), with 7.25 lakh hectares sown against a target of 22.50 lakh hectares. However, wheat and barley sowing have only reached 55,845 hectares—1.56% of the total target area of 35.81 lakh hectares. Wheat, in particular, has been sown in 45,520 hectares so far, with the state aiming for an area of 32 lakh hectares this season.

Overall, Rajasthan’s mustard and other winter crop sowing reflect a positive outlook. Given sufficient rainfall and robust water reserves, rabi crop targets remain achievable with the continued expansion of planting areas in the coming weeks.

Finally

With favorable soil moisture and water storage, Rajasthan’s rabi sowing, particularly mustard, is on track to meet targets, supporting a positive outlook for the season.
