Bajwa asks AAP govt to address soaring wheat flour prices in Punjab

With wheat and wheat flour prices continuing to soar in Punjab, assembly leader of opposition (LoP) Partap Singh Bajwa on Thursday urged the AAP-led state govt to take immediate steps to curb rising inflation, which is causing financial stress among people.”Though wheat is given to approximately 1.54 crore beneficiaries through a public distribution system (PDS) in the state, the entire population does not come under the scheme.

The middle class in particular has been bearing the brunt of a steep rise in wheat and wheat flour prices. It has been difficult for them to make ends meet in such a critical situation,” Bajwa added.Bajwa said people are forced to buy wheat flour at Rs 3,600 to 3,700 per quintal at the moment, and the price is expected to rise to Rs 3,800 in coming days. In May last year, wheat flour was available for Rs 2,650. He added the sudden rise in wheat price has also increased the cost of wheat-based products like bread, biscuits, and other bakery products.

“The state machinery, including police and administration, must act. They must check whether hoarders are escalating the situation. Govt must work on reducing the financial stress in people’s lives,” Bajwa said.Qadian MLA Bajwa added rising inflation in other food items too has put the lives of common people out of gear.
