By Nivedita Dash

India has been exposing Pakistan’s lies for long now. In the latest, India has left Pakistan red-faced over claims of Basmati rice which Islamabad has been claiming as its own. In reality, these Basmati rice are smuggled from India to Pakistan.

Scientists of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and exporters of our country have warned the government several times about the dangers associated with illegal cultivation of different varieties of improved Basmati rice in Pakistan. Recently, the lie of Pakistan claiming one variety of Basmati as its own has been exposed. Pirated varieties of Indian Basmati are being grown in Pakistan. Pakistan’s lie has been caught in the laboratories of Europe as well as in the laboratories of India. Let us know the nefarious story of pirating seeds.

Pakistan exposed in Europe’s lab

India has told the European Union that Pakistan is illegally growing Indian Basmati varieties and has provided evidence of DNA tests conducted in a European lab in this regard. According to media reports, Indian officials had tested the DNA of Basmati varieties grown in Pakistan in a European lab. The result showed that they were Indian varieties grown illegally in Pakistan.

These tests have been conducted by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). These tests were conducted because Pakistan had applied for PGI tag for its Basmati rice, which was opposed in India and Basmati was tested as evidence.

India exports Basmati rice worth about Rs 50 thousand crore annually. In the global market, Basmati rice falls in the premium category and its price is up to twice that of normal rice varieties. There is competition between Pakistan and India in the Basmati market in Europe, America, Australia, New Zealand and Middle East countries of the Gulf. While in India, through continuous research on Basmati, varieties of better productivity and quality have been developed, work has not been done at this level in Pakistan. This is the reason why India’s Basmati rice varieties are being pirated and grown illegally in Pakistan. Which is harming India’s Basmati business.
