India Crosses 116 GW Solar PV Manufacturing Capacity Amid Centre’s Push For Indigenous Production
India’s domestic solar manufacturing sector has reached a major milestone, with the country’s solar PV module manufacturing capacity crossing 116 GW as of 31 October 2025, the Parliament was informed on Tuesday (2 December).
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) informed Parliament that this rapid expansion is a result of sustained policy support aimed at promoting indigenous production of renewable energy equipment, including solar panels, wind turbine components, and battery storage systems.
Government Push Behind Solar Manufacturing Surge
The ministry highlighted multiple initiatives—such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for high-efficiency modules, domestic content requirements in key subsidy programmes, customs duty on imported solar components, and duty exemptions on capital goods—to strengthen the domestic solar ecosystem.
Under the solar PLI scheme alone, Letters of Award have been issued for setting up over 48 GW of new module manufacturing units across the country.
Wind and Battery Storage Manufacturing Also Expanding
India’s wind turbine manufacturing capacity currently stands at around 20 GW annually, supported by the Approved List of Models & Manufacturers (ALMM), which now includes 14 companies and 33 certified turbine models.
The ministry has also mandated sourcing of critical wind turbine components from approved domestic facilities.
In the energy storage sector, the Government has approved a Rs 18,100-crore PLI scheme for 50 GWh of advanced chemistry cell (ACC) battery manufacturing.
Additionally, viability-gap funding schemes worth over Rs 9,000 crore combined have been announced to accelerate deployment of large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Manufacturing Zones for Renewable Equipment
To consolidate India’s position as a global clean-energy manufacturing hub, the Government has proposed dedicated manufacturing zones.
A pilot brownfield zone is being developed at Mohasa Babai in Narmadapuram district, Madhya Pradesh, with an outlay of Rs 400 crore.
Broader Vision: Green Hydrogen and Domestic Capability
The ministry also noted that under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, financial incentives have been awarded to 15 companies for electrolyser manufacturing, strengthening India’s supply chain for emerging energy technologies.
