Guinness crowns Japan’s Kinmemai Premium as world’s most expensive rice

Japan’s Kinmemai Premium rice has been certified by Guinness World Records as the most expensive rice in the world, CNN reported.

Only 1,000 boxes of the premium grain are produced annually, with each box priced at about $73. According to Keiji Saika, president of Toyo Rice Corporation, as reported by CNN, award-winning rice varieties are carefully selected for flavour and texture, before their enzyme levels are tested to assess vitality and what he describes as the grain’s “life force”.

One chef told CNN the rice grains shone like “diamonds”, though opinions varied when it came to the taste test.
