India’s state-run gas distributor GAIL (India) Ltd (BOM:532155) has approved the development of a 600-MW solar power project with battery storage in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, it said on Monday.

The company’s board cleared the greenfield project, with a total investment of INR 32.95 billion (USD 352.2m/EUR 300.8m), to be financed through a mix of debt and equity, according to a stock exchange filing.

The project will include a co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 550 MWh.

GAIL said the project is expected to be completed within 15 months from the award of an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.

The company currently operates around 29 MW of solar capacity at full utilisation, and around 118 MW of wind farms, according to its website.

GAIL’s stated goal is to reach up to 3.4 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035 while reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, targeting net zero by 2040.
